Helen R. Hull portrays a household disrupted by the competing claims of scientific work, marriage and practical care. The movements of the family and its visitors reveal how difficult it is for one person’s absorbing ambition to fit comfortably into the lives of others.
The story follows a researcher whose hopes of making a genuine discovery are bound up with frustration, self-regard and his relationships at home. Conversations that seem ordinary carry the pressure of incompatible expectations. Hull builds the conflict through small domestic actions and the changing ways the characters understand one another.
Its resolution returns to the prospect of work, leaving the reader to consider what has changed beneath the renewed declarations of purpose. First published in the Chicago Tribune’s magazine section in February 1928, this complete short story preserves Garrett Price’s illustrations and the source edition’s original spelling, production notes and credits.
