Helen R. Hull sets this one-act play in the study of Geoffrey March, a husband preparing to leave a household whose emotional pressures have become unbearable to him. His wife Eunice calls from the adjoining room, and the attempted departure becomes a confrontation over dependence, fear and the possibility of an independent life.
The drama unfolds through conversation, pauses and sharply observed stage directions. Geoffrey's packed papers and hidden handbag give material form to intentions he struggles to state, while Eunice's requests and threatened responses expose the conflict between care for another person and the wish to escape.
First published in The Touchstone in December 1919, the play is complete in this EPUB, including its setting, dialogue and final stage action. The concentrated domestic scene offers a study of emotional obligation and the difficulty of separating compassion from the patterns that bind two people together.
