This report develops methods for estimating suspended sediment in the Snake River near Weiser, Idaho. The study compares historical and recent sampling periods upstream from the Hells Canyon Complex, where the movement of sediment has consequences for reservoir storage, sandbars, and river habitats.
Streamflow-based regression models are evaluated for total sediment, fine material, and sand. The analysis considers how changes in sediment supply affect model performance and compares a recent-period model with an acoustic surrogate approach.
Readers will find a case study in using monitoring data to estimate river sediment loads. The report explains the datasets, trends, modelling choices, and sources of error, with figures and tables supporting comparison across methods. It also sets out the practical relevance of distinguishing periods with different sediment conditions rather than treating the entire record as a single unchanging system.
