Sophie Coulombeau investigates reading practices and sibling rivalry through Charles Burney’s response to the first novel of his sister Frances. The study follows Evelina from its publication in 1778 into the letters, poems, annotations, and library exchanges through which Charles engaged with it. His effort to influence the book’s reception becomes a way to examine the social relationships surrounding literary reputation.
Drawing together biography, bibliography, and the history of reading, Coulombeau considers how a novel was introduced, circulated, interpreted, and lent to others. Manuscript evidence and contemporary prints place the family story within the networks of eighteenth-century readers and circulating libraries. The resulting account offers a close view of literary exchange, showing how private judgments and family ambitions could shape a work’s public life.
