This edited volume examines how quantification and scales change through the history of languages. Its contributions draw on corpus evidence and formal analysis to trace developments in meaning across Germanic, Romance and Semitic languages.
Studies address universal quantification, scalarity, reference, modality, presupposition and related interfaces between semantics, syntax and pragmatics. The papers grew from the 2017 Formal Diachronic Semantics conference and were revised for the volume. The complete 2020 book retains all chapters, original examples and references.
