Léon Chevreuil brings together reports of telepathy, apparitions, materialisation, and other psychical experiences in an argument for the survival of personality after bodily death. The book treats these subjects as connected parts of a larger inquiry into the nature of mind and the possible reach of human faculties.
Twelve chapters move from the general problem of survival to telepathy, bodily disorders, and claims about previous lives. Later sections examine the agents Chevreuil believes act in psychical manifestations, distinguish several kinds of materialisation, and discuss spontaneous experiences as well as communications attributed to the dead. Accounts of experiments and cases form the basis for his comparisons and conclusions.
This is Agnes Kendrick Gray’s English translation, published in the United States by E. P. Dutton in 1920. The complete historical edition preserves the original printed pages, contents, and final chapter, “Mors Janua Vitae,” through its printed ending.
