Pragmatics in Translation examines what happens to meaning, relationships and social intentions when language passes between speakers, cultures and media. Daria Dayter, Miriam A. Locher and Thomas C. Messerli approach translation through interpersonal pragmatics, treating it as situated communication rather than a straightforward exchange of equivalent words.
The book surveys written translation, interpreting and audiovisual translation before developing two extended case studies. One considers risky communicative intentions in simultaneous interpreting; the other examines relational work in Korean television drama, its subtitles and viewers’ live comments. Across these settings, the authors ask how participation structures and the medium shape what can be said, understood or left implicit.
Readers encounter an overview of the field alongside concrete examples of research methods and questions. Concepts such as mediality, participation and relational work connect the individual studies to broader problems of context, identity and audience. The concluding discussion identifies directions for future inquiry, making the volume useful to adult readers interested in linguistics, translation studies and the social uses of language.
