Frédéric Vallée-Tourangeau explores creative problem solving as an interaction between people and the objects they work with. The book questions accounts that locate creativity entirely inside an individual mind, drawing attention instead to the way materials and partly formed solutions can change what a person notices or tries next. Its central concern is the unfolding process through which a solution becomes possible.
Discussions of insight and the familiar ‘aha’ experience lead to a methodological proposal for studying people as they manipulate a task’s physical elements. An illustrated investigation of solution processes supports the argument for treating thought, action, and environment together. Later sections reconsider restructuring and the scarcity of purely internal insight, while an appendix provides additional detail for readers interested in the research approach.
