Niche Wars brings together accounts of Australia’s involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq between 2001 and 2014. Senior officials, military personnel and other participants reflect on policy decisions, operations and the specialised contributions Australia made within larger coalition campaigns.
Chapters cover air and maritime operations, battle groups, embedded personnel, command arrangements, intelligence, policing, assistance and relations with the media. The closing section considers lessons and legacies and the work of writing an official history. Maps, photographs, deployment lists and chronologies provide a framework for comparing the different perspectives in the collection.
