Narratives of the Rites and Laws of the Yncas

by Cristóbal de Molina, Juan de Santa Cruz Pachacuti Yamqui, Francisco de Ávila

About this book

Clements R. Markham translates and brings together four early accounts of Andean religious practices, traditions and institutions. The collection includes writings associated with Cristóbal de Molina, Juan de Santa Cruz Pachacuti Yamqui, Francisco de Ávila and Polo de Ondegardo.

The narratives describe ceremonies, sacred places, stories of origins and the organization of life under the Yncas. Their different authors and circumstances produce distinct perspectives on the material, while Markham’s introduction and notes explain the sources and connect names, places and practices across the accounts. Quechua terms appear throughout the volume.

The extensive indexes make the compilation useful for following subjects, geographical names, vocabulary, deities and individuals. First issued by the Hakluyt Society in 1873, it preserves a substantial body of early testimony in English translation. This complete edition includes the introductory material, four main narratives, notes and indexes, with the Gutenberg transcription corrections documented at the end.
