John Bourbon Wasson examines Spiritualism through a comparison of spiritualists’ teachings and his reading of scripture. Modern Spiritualism Laid Bare develops a connected argument about the nature of reported communications, the ideas attributed to spirits and the consequences the author associates with those ideas.
The volume is complete in two parts. The second continues the first as an appendix and includes autobiographical accounts and travels on the American continent, in the Holy Land and in Europe. These personal passages stand alongside Wasson’s discussion of spiritual claims and religious interpretation. The original 1887 edition retains both parts, its chapter sequence and the author’s introductory explanation of the work.
