Estimating the size and likelihood of major floods requires consistent treatment of streamflow records, historical information, and unusual hydrologic conditions. This report sets out methods for peak-flow frequency analyses at streamgages in and around four northern and western states.
The authors explain how the national Bulletin 17C guidelines are implemented for Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming, including departures from standard procedures where local conditions require them. The report provides a common framework for preparing and interpreting analyses rather than treating every streamgage as an unrelated exercise. An accompanying data release supplies worked examples for selected sites.
First published in 2025, the complete native report retains its methods, references, original figures, and linked supporting resources. Its cover photographs show flooding at USGS streamgages in each of the four states, preserving the original federal photographer credits.
