Anna Kent traces the history of Australian government scholarships for people from Papua New Guinea and the Pacific. Beginning with the first schemes in 1948, the study follows changes in education, aid and diplomatic priorities through the Australia Awards of 2018.
Ten chapters examine administrative arrangements, decolonisation, Papua New Guinea’s independence and the reports that reshaped international education during the 1980s. Scholarship recipients’ experiences connect the official decisions with individual lives. Based on archival research and developed from Kent’s recent doctoral work, the book includes a foreword by Nayahamui Michelle Rooney, a bibliography and an index.
