Helen R. Hull follows Elizabeth Rossbridge during an unusual period when all four of her sons have returned home. She has long wished to have the family together, but the reality brings demands, teasing and conflicts that unsettle her sense of the home she has tried to create.
The story develops through ordinary domestic occasions and Elizabeth’s effort to find a place for her own feelings among the needs of her husband and grown sons. A bird’s attempt to make a nest gives the title its place in the narrative. This complete 1940 Redbook story retains the original text and O. F. Schmidt’s illustrations.
