Last Years of Louis XV

by Imbert de Saint-Amand

About this book

Imbert de Saint-Amand reconstructs the court and society of France during the closing years of Louis XV’s reign. The first part moves through the king, nobility, clergy, magistracy, middle classes and salons, building a picture of the social setting in which court personalities operated.

The second part concentrates on the women of Versailles, especially Madame du Barry, Madame Louise and the young Marie Antoinette. It follows the dauphiness’s arrival and marriage festivities, her position within the royal family and her relations with her mother, Maria Theresa, before turning to the king’s death and an epilogue on du Barry. Elizabeth Gilbert Martin’s complete 1893 English edition retains its portraits, chapter divisions and historical narrative.
