Papus brings together reports and experiments concerning hypnosis, psychic phenomena and occult traditions. Written in French, the book asks how observations of altered states and unusual physical or mental effects might relate to the teachings of earlier esoteric writers.
Case accounts, discussions of experiments and interpretations of magical practices form a broad survey of the subject as Papus understood it in the late nineteenth century. The original phototype plates and drawings by Ange Bossard, L. Bouchet, L. de Waldner and L. Delfosse remain in this complete 1897 edition, together with the preface, notes and supporting material.
