Hélène Vacaresco recalls encounters with European sovereigns and their families, beginning with Queen Elizabeth of Romania, known as the writer Carmen Sylva. Her portraits draw upon conversation, court life, personal impressions and remembered occasions.
The chapters range across Britain, Austria, Germany, Russia, Italy, Spain and other royal households. Rather than offering a continuous political history, the memoir presents individual character sketches and social observations. The complete 1904 edition retains its twelve illustrations, photographic credits and index.
