This volume introduces philosophical questions about religious belief, the arguments offered for and against it, and the limits of treating all religion as a debate about one kind of God. Its chapters combine historical context with close attention to the structure of reasons and objections.
The discussion begins with the relationship between philosophy and religion in Western thought, then considers theoretical arguments for God’s existence and less familiar practical or experiential arguments. Subsequent chapters examine reasons for disbelief, the problem of evil and related difficulties, and attempts to explain religious belief through cognitive and other natural processes. The concluding chapter broadens the discussion beyond monotheism to the diversity of religious traditions.
Edited by Beau Branson, with Christina Hendricks as series editor, the book includes a glossary and contributor information. It is intended for introductory university study and adult readers interested in comparing philosophical approaches to religion.
