Introduction to Philosophy: Philosophy of Mind

by Heather Salazar (editor); Christina Hendricks (series editor)

About this book

How can thought, experience, and choice belong to a physical organism? This introduction maps the main philosophical responses to the mind–body problem and explains why consciousness remains a difficult subject even when we know much about brains and behaviour.

The chapters move from Descartes’s substance dualism through materialism, behaviourism, functionalism, and property dualism. Further discussions consider qualia, theories of consciousness, the content of concepts, and freedom of the will. Arguments and objections are set beside one another, allowing readers to follow what each view explains and where competing accounts challenge it.

Heather Salazar edits the volume, with Christina Hendricks as series editor. Its eight subject chapters, references, and contributor information provide a compact route into university-level philosophy of mind while remaining accessible to adult readers approaching these debates independently.
