Introduction to Philosophy: Logic

by Benjamin Martin (book editor); Christina Hendricks (series editor)

About this book

This introduction explains how to recognise an argument, uncover its structure, and evaluate whether its reasons support its conclusion. It connects philosophical reasoning with arguments encountered in ordinary discussion, where an apparently persuasive claim may depend on an unstated premise or a misleading inference.

Five chapters introduce the nature of logic, the evaluation of different kinds of arguments, formal representation, common informal fallacies, and necessary and sufficient conditions. Worked examples and exercises give readers opportunities to distinguish validity from other forms of support and to test their understanding. A separate solutions section, glossary, and further reading make the volume useful for independent study as well as an introductory university course.

Benjamin Martin edits the book and Christina Hendricks edits the series. The complete digital edition includes the instructional chapters and its supporting reference and licensing sections.
