Initiation: The Perfecting of Man

by Annie Besant

About this book

Annie Besant describes the path of initiation as understood within Theosophy, beginning with the conduct and aspirations of a person living an ordinary worldly life. The essays follow the search for a spiritual teacher, the relationship between teacher and pupil, and the discipline Besant associates with spiritual development. Christian narratives and ideas from other religious traditions form part of her interpretation.

The later discussions consider the Christ-life, a spiritual hierarchy and the expectation of a coming world teacher. Together, the six essays present Besant’s account of discipleship and initiation as stages in the perfecting of human character. This complete 1923 American edition retains its forewords, preface and original conclusion; the work first appeared in 1912.
