Inhibition, Symptom and Anxiety

by Sigmund Freud; English translation supervised by L. Pierce Clark; preface by Sándor Ferenczi

About this book

Freud reconsiders the relationship between inhibition, symptom formation and anxiety in this theoretical work on psychoanalysis. He distinguishes restrictions on the ego’s functions from symptoms and develops his account through discussions of defense, phobias, compulsion and the ways anxiety enters psychological conflict.

The eleven sections include examinations of childhood animal phobias, undoing and isolation, fear development and the theory of birth trauma, followed by addenda. This is the complete 1927 English edition supervised by L. Pierce Clark, with Sándor Ferenczi’s preface. The original terminology and sequence of arguments are retained throughout.
