Michael B. Toffolo introduces infrared spectroscopy as a way to investigate the materials and processes that make up archaeological deposits. The book treats a sedimentary context as a changing system: the components visible today reflect human activities as well as transformations that occurred during burial and over longer periods. It links the physical basis of infrared analysis to the questions archaeologists ask of soils, minerals, and other remains.
After a historical and theoretical introduction, Toffolo develops a practical workflow spanning field observation, sampling, laboratory preparation, and interpretation. Chapters explain the spectra of major sediment components and apply the method through selected archaeological case studies. The emphasis is on connecting measurements to formation processes and on recognizing the limits of a particular interpretation. Original diagrams, spectra, references, and links to the publisher’s additional resources are retained in this complete edition.
