Sheriff Bill Ludden has more important work to do than repeatedly quiet Croup Kadem’s disturbances in Tipping Rock. In Raymond S. Spears’s In a Matter of Nuisances, an exasperating local troublemaker prompts a solution that puts another boastful character, Dud Pilarn, into an unexpected position of responsibility. Ludden appoints Pilarn a special deputy and sends him to serve a warrant on Kadem. The decision alarms the sheriff’s friends, who see little reason to entrust authority to a man they regard as another nuisance. The resulting encounter tests reputations for courage, the uses of bluff and the sheriff’s understanding of the people in his county.
First published in West on August 20, 1930, this humorous adult Western contrasts the men’s noisy reputations with their conduct under pressure. The unchanged EPUB preserves the complete story and the illustrations by Nicholas Eggenhofer and Frederick Witton.
