Writing anonymously as a King's Counsel and Doctor of Laws, the author recounts his family's experiences with automatic writing and other forms of spirit communication beginning in April 1916. The account is shaped by wartime bereavement and by questions about the nature of life after death.
The opening chapters describe how the author's daughters moved from using a planchette to producing longer written messages. Dated communications, explanations of the circumstances in which they were received and reflections on their meaning form the body of the book. The author connects these experiences with Christian beliefs about inspiration, resurrection and the continued existence of loved ones.
Later material broadens the narrative through teachings and extended communications about spiritual life. A concluding story attributed to Amra, a child of ancient Egypt, gives the book a different literary register. The volume brings a family's record of private sittings together with a sustained religious interpretation of psychic experience.
