This Economic Research Service report measures how consistently U.S. households could obtain enough food during 2023. Based on the Current Population Survey Food Security Supplement, it distinguishes food security, low food security and very low food security, then presents estimates of their prevalence and severity.
Tables and charts compare households by income, composition and other characteristics, examine differences across States, and describe food spending and participation in nutrition assistance programs. The authors explain the survey measures and statistical comparisons so that changes between groups and years can be interpreted carefully. This complete September 2024 report preserves the original methods, detailed results and references.
