Karen Fox traces the history of honours in Australia from the colonial period to the early twenty-first century. The book follows debates over titles, awards and public recognition, asking what the selection of recipients reveals about changing ideas of service, achievement and national identity.
Chapters examine the imperial system, wartime awards, the creation of the Order of Australia and later disputes over the place of British honours. Drawing on official records, newspapers and award data, Fox considers both institutional decisions and public reactions. A list of honours explains the abbreviations used throughout, and the closing discussion brings the story into the period after 2015.
