Highly Complex Syllable Structure: A Typological and Diachronic Study

by Shelece Easterday

About this book

Shelece Easterday investigates languages whose syllables permit unusually complex combinations of sounds. A broad typological sample supports an examination of how consonants, vowels, stress and morphology interact in these systems.

The study compares proposed correlations with detailed cross-linguistic evidence and considers how complex patterns can develop from simpler ones through processes such as vowel reduction. Tables, language profiles and diachronic analyses connect the typological account with the mechanisms of change. The complete 2019 monograph develops the author’s May 2017 dissertation and retains its full references, appendices and indexes.
