High-Performance Computing (HPC) Security Overlay

by Yang Guo, Jeremy Licata, Jeff Neel

About this book

High-performance computing systems combine specialised hardware, software and fast networks to support large simulations, data analysis and the training of AI models. This NIST report addresses the security requirements created by those environments, where protective measures must also take account of performance and the needs of different users.

The publication introduces a security overlay built on the moderate baseline in NIST SP 800-53B. It tailors 60 controls with guidance for HPC settings, connecting the reference architecture to practical questions about access, configuration and operation. Written for security managers, administrators and programme managers, it retains the original control guidance and references in the May 2026 final edition.
