E. Everett Evans follows Fred Foxe and George Roberts through a strange gateway into a world they do not recognize. The vanished walls behind them and the swollen red sun above the surrounding jungle make clear that their discovery has carried them far beyond an ordinary ruined enclosure.
The two men explore the new environment and face dangers that test their resourcefulness and loyalty. Unseen observers watch their behavior and interpret it for purposes the visitors do not understand. What appears to be an adventure in unfamiliar surroundings is also an examination conducted by inhabitants with their own plans.
The story connects survival and attraction with the question of what the gateway is really for. Its final disclosure changes the meaning of the welcome offered to the travelers. First printed in Orbit Science Fiction in September 1953, this complete adult pulp story retains the original narrative and the edition’s illustrations, credits and license.
