Lillie McGinnis presents a sequence of narratives and verses that she describes as automatically and inspirationally written between March 1913 and March 1914. The speakers recount earthly lives and experiences after death, returning to questions of character, responsibility and spiritual development.
The accounts adopt the voices of people from different occupations and circumstances, including a physician, a miller, parents and historical figures. McGinnis’s foreword describes her movement from planchette writing to writing by hand and explains the circumstances in which the collection took shape. The original 1915 edition contains forty-nine numbered chapters and a portrait of the author.
