Douglas S. Thomas investigates how the time materials and goods spend moving through manufacturing affects production and productivity. The report considers raw materials, work in progress and finished inventories as parts of a connected production process.
Using U.S. manufacturing data, the study develops regression models and simulations to estimate the effects of changes in flow time. It distinguishes the influence of work-in-process delays from the time associated with materials and finished goods, then examines the implications for value added and multifactor productivity. The complete original August 2019 report retains its methods, results, tables and references.
