Finding the Enemy Within: Blasphemy Accusations and Subsequent Violence in Pakistan

by Sana Ashraf

About this book

Sana Ashraf investigates how accusations of blasphemy emerge, circulate and sometimes lead to violence in Pakistan. Drawing on ethnographic research in Lahore, the book examines the relationships between religious ideas, personal disputes, community boundaries, legal institutions and claims to moral authority.

Its chapters move from historical and religious contexts to individual accusations, public mobilisation, punishment and the competing roles of courts and popular justice. Interviews and accounts of particular encounters show how uncertainty and social relationships shape the escalation of cases. An appendix reproduces the relevant offences relating to religion from the Pakistan Penal Code, followed by a bibliography and index.
