Expressions of Austronesian Thought and Emotions

by James J. Fox (editor)

About this book

How people describe feelings is closely connected with language, bodily experience and social life. This collection compares expressions of thought and emotion across several Austronesian communities, examining the terms and practices through which people recognise and communicate inner states.

The studies include dreams and origin rituals among the Gumay of Sumatra, a Borneo healing ritual, Toraja ritual participation and Rotenese expressions of thinking and feeling. Further chapters discuss Tetun personhood and the relationship between posture, ethics and emotion on Dobu. The essays combine linguistic attention with ethnographic accounts, supported by figures, tables, references and an index.
