Stephanie K. Drumheller and colleagues describe new fossil material belonging to Deltasuchus motherali, a Cretaceous crocodyliform from Texas. Specimens representing different stages of growth allow them to investigate how the animal’s form and likely feeding abilities changed as it matured.
Detailed anatomical descriptions compare the newly available elements with material already known for the species. The snout becomes broader and more robust with age, suggesting changes in function as well as overall size. Photographs, diagrams and character descriptions support the comparison and the revised diagnosis presented in the study.
The authors then place these observations within phylogenetic analyses of related crocodyliforms. Their results connect the animal’s development and ecology with the broader distribution of distinctive lineages in Cretaceous Appalachia. This complete illustrated research monograph provides both the descriptive evidence and the comparative analysis behind the proposed relationships.
