Evaluating Hydrologic Data Products for Scientific and Management Applications Related to Potential Future Streamflow Conditions in the Upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers

by Molly Van Appledorn, Lucie Sawyer, John T. Delaney

About this book

This report evaluates whether a set of hydrologic data products can support studies of potential future conditions in the Upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. It compares observed streamflow with historical simulations to assess the suitability of those products for ecological research and restoration planning.

The analysis examines seven characteristics related to flow magnitude, seasonality, and regime at nineteen streamgages. It explains the chain of climate, hydrologic, and routing models that generated the data and investigates geographic differences in their performance.

Readers will find a detailed example of testing model products before applying them to a management question. The study distinguishes performance across different flow characteristics and documents limitations in representing historical conditions. Its tables, figures, references, and supporting material help explain why the availability of a model dataset alone does not establish its suitability for a particular river-system application.
