Dirt Cheap

by Carl Clausen

About this book

Carl Clausen’s Dirt Cheap follows Frank Westfield, a modestly paid bookkeeper whose family considers him an unsuccessful exception to its ambitions. Frank is content with his work for the Barnett Brick Company and with the companionship of Ruth Barnett, whose inherited property becomes central to a contest with a powerful businessman.

Morgan Kent expects to impose his will on the people of Rocky Ford. Frank’s apparent lack of drive makes him seem an easy opponent, but the dispute turns on practical knowledge, land use and the terms of a business arrangement. Family judgments and Ruth’s uncertain prospects give the financial struggle a personal importance.

The story combines a commercial contest with a romance in which patience and ingenuity matter more than public displays of success. Its conclusion resolves the property dispute and the couple’s plans together. Originally published in Argosy All-Story Weekly on April 6, 1929, the complete adult story includes Howard V. Brown’s illustration in the original EPUB.
