John Claiborne Isbell presents forty studies of French women writers active between 1750 and 1850. Each chapter introduces a writer through her life, literary work and place within the cultural world of her time.
The book combines biography with readings of selected texts, following connections among salons, correspondence, fiction, travel and public life. Familiar figures appear alongside writers whose work has received less attention. Portraits and bibliographical references accompany the studies, providing routes into a century of varied literary careers.
