Alfred S. Carasso investigates how information about an earlier fluid state can be recovered by running a numerical approximation backward in time. The study focuses on two-dimensional incompressible flow governed by the Navier–Stokes equations.
A stabilized explicit leapfrog finite difference scheme addresses the instability of this backward problem. Numerical examples examine the method’s behavior and the recovery of flow information. The complete mathematical report preserves its equations, computational discussion, figures and references.
