Cronyism: Liberty versus Power in Early America, 1607–1849

by Patrick Newman

About this book

Patrick Newman traces political favour-seeking in early American history, from the colonial period through the Mexican War. He examines how politicians, business interests and other groups sought advantages through banking arrangements, tariffs, subsidies, land policy and territorial expansion.

The narrative follows successive administrations and reform movements, using Murray Rothbard's liberty-versus-power framework to interpret changes in special-interest legislation. Newman discusses both the policies enacted by political leaders and the pressures that changed reformers once they held office.

Published in 2021, this is the first volume of Newman's history of cronyism. The complete edition retains its notes, bibliography, subject and name indexes, and Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 notice. It is distinct from the later volume covering 1849–1929.
