This collection presents a series of spiritual communications attributed to Lorenzo Dow and other departed speakers, received through an unnamed woman. Published in New York in 1861, it sets out practical and religious teachings in the form of short addresses to Spiritualist readers.
The subjects include mediumship, influence, God, harmony, purity of life and the condition of the departed. Later addresses turn to death, fortitude, love, marriage, crime and the use of zeal. Across these topics, the speakers connect the relationship between the living and the spirit world with the conduct of everyday life.
The introduction describes the collection as a plain statement of Spiritualist duties rather than an extended argument. Its repeated concern with self-reformation, cooperation and spiritual development gives the individual addresses a common purpose. The complete historical edition preserves the original arrangement and its ninety-one numbered pages of text.
