Michael Pleyer and Stefan Hartmann connect research on the origins and continuing evolution of language with the usage-based approach of cognitive linguistics. Their central questions concern both the emergence of the human capacity for language and the cultural processes through which particular languages take shape and change. Comparisons with animal communication help clarify which features require explanation.
The book considers language-trained apes and birds, cooperation and joint attention, laboratory experiments, and computational models of cultural transmission. It also looks at what real-world language emergence and change can contribute to evolutionary accounts. By bringing these strands together, the authors outline ways in which cognitive linguistics and language-evolution research can inform one another, with particular attention to learning, social interaction, and patterns that arise from repeated language use.
