Coastal communities and marine environments face connected questions about storms, erosion, changing shorelines, seafloor processes and natural resources. This U.S. Geological Survey program strategy organizes the scientific work needed to understand those conditions and provide information that supports decisions.
An overview and strategic framework connect the program’s research directions with observations, mapping, scientific models and the development of useful products. The report considers both hazards and resources, bringing coastal change into the same discussion as the geology and processes of the marine environment. A later section examines partnerships, with tables identifying examples of collaboration among federal and non-federal organizations. Compiled by Carolyn Ruppel and Patricia A. Dalyander, this complete report retains its original photographs, diagrams and references. The planning period in its title is 2020–2030; this Circular was published in 2026.
