Glenn Robert and colleagues examine approaches to healthcare improvement in which patients and staff contribute directly to understanding problems and developing better services. The book distinguishes co-production, involving people as contributors to their care, from co-design, a collaborative process for creating or improving services.
The authors trace the origins of these approaches, describe their use in healthcare and consider practical difficulties in forming and sustaining partnerships. Examples of experience-based co-design accompany an assessment of the evidence, including its limitations and implications for future work. The emphasis is on the relationships, methods and organisational conditions involved in improving care.
