Characterization of Stream Water Quality and Groundwater Levels in the Central Pine Barrens Region, Suffolk County, New York, 2017–23

by Amanda Nicole May, Irene Fisher, Amy E. Simonson

About this book

This U.S. Geological Survey study examines groundwater levels and stream water quality in the Central Pine Barrens region of Suffolk County, New York. It brings together observations from the Carmans and Peconic Rivers with monitoring of the aquifer during 2017–2023.

The report describes the study area, sampling and analytical methods, groundwater monitoring and quality-assurance procedures. It then examines patterns in groundwater levels and river chemistry, including water-quality conditions relevant to aquatic life and calculations of daily loads. Maps place the sites within the region’s land uses and preservation areas, while graphs and tables organize the measurements and comparisons. First published in March 2025, the complete original report retains its field photographs, data presentations, summary and references.
