Changes in U.S. Family Finances from 2016 to 2019: Evidence from the Survey of Consumer Finances

by Neil Bhutta, Jesse Bricker, Andrew C. Chang

About this book

This Federal Reserve study uses the 2019 Survey of Consumer Finances to examine changes in American families’ income, wealth, assets and debts since 2016. It compares both median and mean outcomes and shows how broad improvements can coexist with substantial differences among groups.

The analysis covers housing, business ownership, retirement accounts, financial assets, borrowing and access to credit. Tables and charts organize the results by family characteristics, while explanatory boxes and a technical appendix describe the survey, weighting and treatment of missing information. The complete September 2020 publication retains the full analysis and methodological documentation.
