About this book

Talbot Mundy's adventure follows a dangerous encounter between secret agent Frank West and mullah Mir Mahommed on the northwest frontier of British India. Recounted against the harsh landscape around Peshawar, the story turns on plans for an uprising, divided loyalties and the difficulty of learning what another person intends.

The narrator looks back across thirty years to a world of military outposts, mountain routes and restless frontier communities. Night movements, an ambush and a mountain cavern give the action its immediate setting, while the mullah's calculations and West's arrival drive the conflict forward.

Originally serialized in Argosy across April 27, May 4 and May 11, 1929, the complete novella brings its seven chapters to a definite ending. The EPUB retains the original illustrations credited to Paul Stahr and the source magazine cover. The narrative combines espionage and frontier adventure with Mundy's interest in strategy, personal courage and the uncertain outcomes of competing ambitions.
