BRICS and the Global Financial Order: Liberalism Contested?

by Johannes Petry; Andreas Nölke

About this book

Johannes Petry and Andreas Nölke investigate how emerging powers participate in and contest the global financial order. Rather than treating BRICS as a single actor, they compare countries and policy areas, examining monetary arrangements, financial markets, and development finance through a framework that distinguishes domestic, transnational, and international activity.

The empirical analysis covers seven countries and eleven issue areas. Exchange-rate regimes, central banks, capital flows, development institutions, and financial governance provide evidence for assessing the relationship between existing liberal arrangements and state-capitalist alternatives. Differences among China, India, Russia, and other participants are central to the book’s explanation of where institutional change has advanced and where it remains limited.
