Helen R. Hull’s short story follows Elizabeth Whittle and her son Hanley through a winter evening in their isolated home. Memories, old clothes and the anticipation of a long-deferred meeting disturb the routines through which they live together.
The story contrasts Elizabeth’s private sense of the past with Hanley’s anxious efforts to care for her. Close descriptions of the kitchen, the cold and the changing light give physical form to their difficult relationship. This is the complete story from The Touchstone, June 1920, with the original ending and Project Gutenberg’s source credits retained.
