During a rest period aboard a spacecraft, a veteran prospector tells passengers about a troubling expedition to an apparently barren asteroid. His account begins as a mining story and develops into a tale of unexplained danger and a past that follows the travellers into space.
Donald A. Wollheim, writing as Martin Pearson, combines the machinery and routines of interplanetary travel with the structure of a ghost story. The complete story first appeared in Orbit Science Fiction in September 1953. Rudolph Belarski’s illustration and Project Gutenberg’s source and rights notes remain in the original ebook.
